With 4th of July just a few days away, it's a good time to think about ways to be safe during your celebrations or parties.
Fireworks is a great place to start. Many people throughout the state of Texas enjoy having fireworks as part of their celebration. Here are some tips to help keep your friends and family safe.
- Be sure to purchase your fireworks from a legal source. When you purchase legally, the manufacturer's name should be on the label as well as proper instructions for use.
- Never let young children handle fireworks
- Avoid handling fireworks after consuming alcohol.
- Keep pets safe - Most pets get "spooked" by loud noises. This could cause them to react instinctively to try and hide or flee and could cause them to injure themselves or others. It's best to keep pets indoors while fireworks are being used.
- Only light one firework at a time and never try to relight a "dud"
- Use fireworks in a clear, open area - this will cut down on fire risk.
Though fireworks require proper use and care to help keep your celebration safe, there are other potential dangers whenever you have a party or group celebration. These are a few other things to keep in mind:
- If your celebration involves water activities on the lake or at a pool
- make sure everyone in the boat wears a lifejacket when on the water
- Whoever drives the boat should remain sober. It's easy to get a false sense of security after a few cold ones!
- Set rules for the pool. examples: no running, no kids in the pool without adult supervision, no glass near the pool.
- It's a good idea to have a first aid kit in case there are minor injuries.
- Most 4th of July celebrations in Texas will include some BBQ!
- If you use a gas grill, be sure to check the lines for cracks or leaks.
- Grill in an open area away from the house, wooden beams or anything that could catch fire if the flame gets out of hand.
- Never grill indoors or in the garage.
Remember, keeping safe on the 4th or July or any celebration with a group of people is pretty common sense. But, it's best to have a plan ahead of time!! Have a safe and fun 4th of July!
